Jobs cuts are coming to SIU-Carbondale. The university has announced it will be cutting dozens of positions this summer due to a budget shortfall. The school has been faced with state budget cuts and declining enrollment, but critics have also said poor financial planning by the school has also contributed to problems.
About 80 jobs will be cut at SIUC as the school deals with $19-million in permanent cuts. The cuts are expected to include 51 civil service employees, and 24 non-tenure track faculty members. The school also has notified about 100 other civil service employees that their positions may also be impacted down the road. Meanwhile, critics of school have cited its sister university, SIU-Edwardsville, as an example of a school that began preparing for the worst several years ago and keeping job cuts to a minimum while trying to maintain curriculum and enrollment.
