Illinois’ state universities could get new salt in their wounds. The Higher Learning Commission warns lawmakers that a continued lack of funding could lead to public colleges and universities being stripped of their accreditation.

The commission is concerned because the lack of a budget has sparked increased tuition, delays in state grants, layoffs and canceled capital projects.
