Southern Illinois University Carbondale has once again distinguished itself as a leader in higher education by receiving recognition on Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s 2024 Transfer Honor Roll. This honor marks the second consecutive year that SIU Carbondale has been acknowledged for its outstanding commitment to supporting transfer students from community colleges.

The Transfer Honor Roll by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society highlights institutions that excel in creating dynamic and innovative pathways for community college transfer students. SIU Carbondale is among 228 public and private colleges and universities across the United States recognized for their efforts in this regard.

Wendell Williams, associate vice chancellor for enrollment management at SIU Carbondale, expressed pride in the university’s achievement, emphasizing that this recognition underscores SIU’s dedication to student success and engagement. He noted that SIU Carbondale strives to eliminate barriers, save students time and money, and provide seamless pathways to affordable, high-quality bachelor’s degrees.

A cornerstone of SIU Carbondale’s approach is the Saluki Step Ahead program, launched in September 2021. This initiative brings the resources of a four-year research university directly to place-bound students at community colleges in Illinois and beyond. Currently encompassing agreements with 49 community college campuses in Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas, the program has already facilitated the enrollment of over 200 students at SIU Carbondale.

Josi Rawls, associate director for transfer relations, highlighted the success of the Saluki Step Ahead program in expanding access to higher education. She noted that the program’s rapid growth demonstrates SIU Carbondale’s appeal as a premier destination for transfer students seeking to pursue bachelor’s degrees in various fields at reduced costs.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society evaluates colleges and universities for the Transfer Honor Roll based on 40 key metrics related to the support and success of transfer students. These metrics include factors such as college cost and financial aid, campus life, admission practices, and bachelor’s degree completion rates. SIU Carbondale’s consistent recognition on the Transfer Honor Roll reflects its ongoing efforts to innovate and adapt to the evolving needs of transfer students nationwide.

As SIU Carbondale continues to enhance its support services and streamline pathways for transfer students, it remains committed to maintaining its position as a leader in higher education accessibility and excellence. The university’s inclusion on the 2024 Transfer Honor Roll reaffirms its role as a top choice for transfer students seeking a robust academic experience and a clear path to achieving their educational goals.
